Vad är Word of mouth marketing?

Inte allt för sällan dyker det upp ett nytt modeord från det stora landet i väst och många är vi som snabbt börjar slänga oss med engelska fraser i brist på svenska termer. Bland dessa uttryck finner vi Word-of-mouth-marketing. WOMM handlar om att jobba med en medveten strategi för att skapa positiv ryktesspridning om ens produkt eller tjänst. Det är egentligen inget nytt på himlen, utan en del i vad vi brukar kalla för varumärkesuppbyggnad, branding eller positionering.

Vad som däremot är nytt är det inflytande som konsumenter och vanliga människor har fått över vad vi populärt kallar för ett företags image (där kom ytterligare en engelsk term i mixen). Som företag har man idag helt tappat greppet om sin image om man inte lyfter upp näsan från sina profildokument och deltar i omgivningens dialoger.

Citatet ovan sätter fingret på den tid vi lever i. Aldrig tidigare har så stor del av befolkningen dagligen skrivit text för så många andra att läsa. Med sociala nätverk och bloggar som kopplar oss till hundratals, om inte tusentals, vänner och bekanta har alla idag möjlighet att sprida vad de tycker om sin omgivning på bara några sekunder. Besvikelse såväl som upprymdhet stannar inte längre vid köksbordet utan kan spridas lång väg om berättelsen fångar och engagerar.

Hur ska man som företag hantera denna brist på kontroll?

Första steget är att acceptera att vi aldrig hade kontroll från första början. Folk har alltid tyckt och tänkt om våra företag, skillnaden idag är den större spridningseffekten. De flesta företag jag har pratat med upplever detta som oerhört skrämmande och hotfullt. Alla har erfarenhet av missnöjda kunder som det inte har kunnat resonera med. Att stå maktlös inför en sådan kund är ingen rolig situation och många upplever att de har händerna bakbundna då de inte kan försvara sig utan att framstå som skurkar på ett eller annat sätt.

Det är skrämmande med transparens, med missnöjda kunder som inte kan gömmas och glömmas, men det är också i transparensen vår möjlighet ligger. Vi får en möjlighet att bemöta kritiken och lösa situationen fullkomligt öppet för andra att se och värdera med egna ögon. Genom att vara tillmötesgående, förstående och förklara situationen så kan vi genom handling visa att vi är måna om våra kunder men att vi precis som alla andra kan begå misstag eller falla offer för yttre omständigheter. Ser man på det från det perspektivet så har vi idag alla möjligheter att vända en riktigt dålig situation till någonting bra, eller åtminstone något acceptabelt.

Om negativa upplevelser kan få spridning så betyder det att positiva upplevelser också kan få det – så hur lyckas man med det senare som företag? Det handlar förstås om att förstå vad det är vi människor tycker om att berätta för andra, och därefter erbjuda den typen av berättelser.

I grunden finns det tre anledningar för folk att berätta om ditt företag för andra:

  1. Du – folk gillar dig eller din produkt och berättar därför gärna för andra. Genom att göra det du erbjuder exceptionellt så blir det värt att prata om (överraska, chocka, skämta).
  2. Jag – vi drivs av känslor och tycker om att känna oss smarta, hjälpsamma och viktiga. Underlätta för folk att lära sig mer och framhäva sin expertis, och lyft fram dem i olika sammanhang.
  3. Vi –  alla vill vara del av en större grupp och känna tillhörighet. Varumärken säger i hög grad något om vilka vi är. Folk som samlas kring ett varumärke är därför de som är mest troliga att diskutera dina produkter med andra. Fundera på olika sätt för dina kunder att mötas och känna tillhörighet.
